United States > TEXAS > CD 18
Congressional District
The 18th Congressional District is perhaps one of the most diverse areas within the city of Houston. In addition to a variety of neighborhoods, the District is a center for higher education, civic and cultural activities, business and industry, and government.

Neighborhoods within the 18th CD include established upper-income communities; fixed-income neighborhoods; subsidized housing; the historic Heights; the changing Freedman's Town; newly-constructed urban lofts, mid-rise and high-rise condos; retirement homes; and nursing homes.

Both the Central Campus and Downtown Campus of The University of Houston are located in the 18th CD. In addition, Texas Southern University, three campuses of Houston Community College, South Texas College of Law, and Lone Star College are within the district. The Texas Medical Center and all of its affiliated teaching hospitals, medical school, and university are adjacent to the TX 18 CD.

Constituents of the 18th CD have access to major suburban hospitals and medical centers, the Houston central business district, many industrial parks, and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport with its international transportation support centers.

Major civic centers in the 18th CD include Minute Maid Stadium, home of the Houston Astros; Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets; and the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Visitors to the Houston area have access to major hotels such as Hilton Americas, Doubletree, Magnolia, Crowne Plaza and Hyatt Regency - all located in the 18th CD.

The 18th CD is enhanced by cultural arts centers such as the Hobby Center, Jones Hall, Alley Theatre, Wortham Center, Central Public Library, and Bayou Place.

Governmental centers located within the 18th CD include Mickey Leland Federal Building, the Federal Courthouse, Harris County Courthouse Complex, Houston City Hall, Houston Metropolitan Transit Headquarters, both Houston Police Department Headquarters and the University of Houston Small Business Development Center.

The 18th CD is rich in recreation areas as well with historic Allen’s Landing, Buffalo Bayou, Tranquility Park and the newest gem, Discovery Green, the downtown Houston park, which will open on April 13, 2008.
