Hello Little Fish, Providing for the common defense isn't a matter of trust, it is a matter of obligation, it is the first reason we have a federal government.
The federal government does not handle traffic arrangement or civic planning or enforce most of our laws, or provide public education, or build most of the bridges.
I've obviously not read everything you've written here and elsewhere, but is it safe to say you are a critic of waste in the defense department? The same government that paid $700 for a toilet seat is the one you want in charge of health care? Plus there is that little thing called "entropy" despite the fact that killing people and blowing things up is inherently easier than healing people and building things our government still manages to waste a lot of money at DOD.
Maybe the next time you go to the library as you remind others to do you can read something called The Constitution, I'm sure you know the section, it's where you've no doubt found Das Kapital.
Medicare looses more money to fraud every year than the entire profit of derived from all private sector health insurance policies. I am just me. I am not a group or party or anything, I am a computer person by trade, and someone who works for a living, and find enjoyment in a job that causes other people happiness. I don’t make a ton of money, and don’t really need it. Could I make, or have made far more in my past (hindsight is 20/20) yes, but I choose my own path. Just as the country chooses it’s ever 2 years. I am no scholar, and don’t pretend to be, but I am logical to a fault.
You ask why I trust the government to do some things but do not want them in other things, here is what and why. First this is taken from my handy dandy pocket constitution.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Insure domestic Tranquility, This is obviously what you are referring to. This has been reinterpreted over the years many ways with many different meanings, but ever increasing power. I do not go so far as Libertarians do, but they are much closer to the mark than Progressives. There are simply some things the federal government can do that states would be stepping on themselves to do. FAA is one of them. If we had 50 different small FAA’s all with different rules, and different pilot qualifications it would be a problem. Same is true for many areas, but what my Doctor does, or I agree to, or what I want to buy, if it’s health insurance or cars or whatever is no business of the governments. Personally I am not real sure it’s the governments job to know everything on my 12 page census form I got. Do they really need to know when my alarm is set for, or when I go to bed or any of this other crap? This is intrusive.
Do I trust the government with Airplane safety? To a point, I have my own backup for 911 problems when I fly a special forces friend showed me, and yes it’s legal. I trust the pilot to get me up and down safely, more than the FAA. Do I trust the government to deliver my mail? Sort of. I trust them to give me bulk mail advertisements, but anything important I use FedEx or UPS. It could go away and I wouldn’t mind. Do I trust the government to do AmTrak? Yes. That is a very nice service and nostalgic. If you have never been anywhere on a train, I highly recommend it once, but that is history, much like a national park or a really old building. You are required to have health insurance because if you get into an accident, get extremely sick, or die...and you don't have insurance, then I have to pay for you as it stands with my taxes. That is how the system works now. With required insurance, at least your have some responsibility. Now if we could get the insurance companies out of the way, and actually audit regularly the pharmaceutical company's books, then we could get the costs of it down. You and I both know too many politicians are funded by those very people, so that will never happen.
