State Rep. Ken Paxton Announces Bid for Texas House Speaker

“Historic Opportunities Demand Bold Action”

(McKinney, TX) – In announcing his bid for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, State Rep. Ken Paxton today issued the following statement:

“Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the service of those who have given so much to our state and nation, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice. It seems appropriate that we focus on how we can best protect our hard-won freedoms which are increasingly under attack.

On Election Day, we witnessed a monumental shift in the political climate, and I believe that historic opportunities demand bold action in defense of our conservative values. Voters across Texas sent a clear message that they favor leadership dedicated to protecting our freedoms and fighting government growth. Texans have provided us with an historic mandate, and they expect us to use this mandate to honestly advance conservative principles and not simply protect the status quo. These goals can only be accomplished with a conservative Speaker.

In January, members of the Texas State Legislature have a unique opportunity and an obligation to do more than simply balance the budget without raising taxes. We also have an opportunity to:

·         Implement measures to reduce property taxes permanently over time;

·         Aggressively fight back on the federal government’s invasion on the rights of Texans, and in fact reclaim our state sovereignty;

·         Limit our state government’s ability to grow beyond the rate of inflation and population;

·         Pass true immigration reform and implement photo id;

·         Provide opportunities for individuals and families to make important decisions such as health care options that are free from governmental intrusion and mandates; and

·         Challenge ourselves to bring solutions to the table that create jobs, sustain economic prosperity, and continue to make Texas a shining light for generations to come.

Republicans have the opportunity to unify behind a conservative Speaker who can effectively lead our Party on the principles our citizens espouse. As someone who has continuously served as an advocate for conservative principles, I am announcing my candidacy for the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

Texans have clearly asked us to advance their values, promote conservative policies and follow a path of long-term economic prosperity, and I stand ready to serve as the leader to accomplish these goals. I welcome the opportunity to work with my colleagues in the Legislature to address the critical issues we face and implement real solutions that will benefit all Texans.”

Oust Straus - Enter Paxton - 'nuff said!
by  janshedd  2010-11-11 12:48:04
If it is true that Joe Straus is threatening to punish any representative (through redistricting) that doesn't support him, then he is the worst kind politician and should not only not be voted in as Speaker, he needs to be fired by his district. Surely here in Texas, we can do better than that.
by Kyle McAfee  2010-11-11 12:48:04
It appears that Mr. Paxton is a fiscal hero from the "records" site I am reviewing. Go Ken!
by Becky Wrinkle  2010-11-11 13:07:32
Ken Paxton sounds good for Texas. He sounds like the kind of person we are trying to find to replace the corruption that is currently there. Pay attention Mr. Perry.
by Susan Davis  2010-11-11 13:10:14
I am so happy to see a Conservative step up to the plate. Speaker Straus was a total disaster when it came to one of our major problems: illegal immigrants that are sapping our State and National economy at a time when we cannot afford it, unfortunately. The same goes for Burt Solomon. Benefits for illegal immigrants such as hospitalization, ER, food stamps, free schooling through highschool, free attorneys to defend them - the list goes on and on. Instead of addressing this drain to the economy, the Debt Commission is suggesting cutting cost of living adjustments for seniors who have paid into the system their entire lives. Way to go, America!
by Sheryl Kelly Howieson  2010-11-11 13:29:27
Well, it is about bloody time! I have been waiting for this move for weeks now! All I want for Christmas is a decent House Speaker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Russ in Dallas  2010-11-11 13:47:01
Excellent! Go Paxton!!!
by Cathy Meyer  2010-11-11 13:49:46
I'm for Paxton. Fin.
by Jake in Point  2010-11-11 13:50:32
It is time we removed the establishment from all phases of our government. Straus has said and done enough already to justify taken hem out of office in the next Primary he runs in. Hope those in his district are paying attrention and have a memory.
by Chrissy  2010-11-11 13:55:15
GO KEN! Couldn't have a better person running for office. Texas is blessed to have Ken willing to serve!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Governor next?
by Michael Goodnight  2010-11-11 14:01:02
After reading Rep. Paxton's views it is critical to get people of his quality in pleading positions in the Texas state gov't. Let our voices be heard and what betrter way than to push for Ken Paxton as speaker!!
by Mark C in Frisco  2010-11-11 14:31:21
It's no longer time for compromise - it's time for these newly elected representatives to take ACTION and a stand against liberal policies. I'm for Ken as Speaker.
by Karen W.  2010-11-11 14:05:26
Sweet. He is my Representative. This will be great if he wins it.
by Melissa  2010-11-11 14:05:27
Ken Paxton is my rep. Very happy about Ken's choice to take a stand. Hearing him at a recent Allen Area Patriots meeting, I know that becoming Speaker (if he wins) entails a lot of personal sacrifice. A lot of time away from family, etc. It is good to see someone do what is difficult because it is the right thing to do.
by Tom Tucker  2010-11-11 14:44:31
Resume shows a qualified candidate for speaker. Let the campaign go forward. No Chicago tactics please. The state needs to be run as a business now since politics cratered our economy. Ken could be the one to lead the House. Anyone else running?
by Kris in Allen  2010-11-11 14:48:40
I'm so excited to see the conservative representatives step up! Thanks Ken - I'm behind you 100%!
by Javier  2010-11-11 14:51:13
I fully support Mr Ken Paxton.
by Sheila Ninowski  2010-11-11 15:01:02
Tea Partiers swayed last week's election by rallying, calling, emailing, writing, and voting liberals out of office. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. Because of corruption on the Texas legislature, WE ARE NOT DONE! We must force Straus OUT! HE and his fellow RINOS are corrupt and have been playing an evil game of power for a long time. We MUST support and defend our conservative members who are willing to stick their necks out and defeat the Rinos who collaborate with the liberals in the Texas Legislature. The list of offenses are a mile long and go way back ... some of it would curl your hair. Can you imagine a fellow Republican being threatened by a Republican Speaker. Welcome to the Texas House of Reps - this has been going on for a long time. GO, KEN PAXTON! Call your reps, people, call your reps!!! This is a critical time ... don't let this 99 to 51 majority go to waste. It doesn't happen often, and we must get rid of the rest of them in the next election, too!
by Ben Montgomery  2010-11-11 23:21:23
Hyperbolic much? Straus is a true fiscal conservative and Ken Paxton, well, he's a nice guy who will get eaten alive by the members. The democRATS will run all over him.

Straus is the victim of lies and smears put out by people who stand to financially gain from his defeat. Those folks are trying to use us! We can't let them!
by Denise Midgley  2010-11-11 15:01:58
Go Ken, GO!
by Linda Clark   2010-11-11 15:08:37
Rep. Paxton has proven himself to be a true conservative over his years in the Texas House. I'm glad he's thrown his hat in the ring!
by Judy Martin  2010-11-11 15:37:36
This is the best news since election night!!! Ken Paxton is THE conservative voice we need to lead Texas! Thank you Ken for stepping up and being willing to serve in this demanding and important position.
by James Sanders  2010-11-11 15:53:29
Not only is Ken Paxton an excellent choice to replace an "establishment" speaker, it should be done by Republicans only. Whatever it takes to allow only the party in power to vote on the speaker must be done.
by Howard Burdick  2010-11-11 15:58:18
I am 100% behind Mr. Paxton as House Speaker. Let me know how I can help!
by Virginia Plekenpol  2010-11-11 16:08:21
We need the most conservative TX House Leader possible who is not an appeaser and can say the word NO with pride. Our greatest challenge is voter fraud right here in out state! I want the legislature to outlaw voter fraud with felony penalty in jail plus fines regardless of job including state, county, city, election personnel in place before 2012. We know a lot of fraud took place in 2008 and in 2010. The 'leader' of the House should agree to carry this banner. I will so advise my state representative. Republicans have a chance to stop this with commitment by leadership and concurrence of members. That will be my message regarding the vote for leader.
by Robert Morris  2010-11-11 16:26:27
It is high time that we conservatives had a real conservative as Speaker!
by Mike Giles  2010-11-11 16:44:07
One of the best -- great deal for Texas if he can be elected.
by Kensley Stewart  2010-11-11 17:02:35
Michael Quinn Sullivan's Empower Texans backs the fiscal conservative, Ken Paxton.

As do I.

Ken Paxton for Speaker.
by J.B.  2010-11-11 19:16:14
Paxton, a true conservative, would make a great Speaker of the House. Straus, a moderate, does not represent the conservative majority. He needs to be ousted!
by Meredith in Parker  2010-11-11 19:35:06
Go Ken! Let us know if there is some way we out here can support his bid!
by Cathy Toups  2010-11-11 19:39:37
This is GREAT news! Go for it, Ken!
by Herb Parker  2010-11-11 19:56:38
I believe Ken Paxton would be an excellent choice for Speaker Of The House. He would be my choice!
by Charlotte Giles  2010-11-11 20:31:14
After voting a number of new conservatives into our Texas Congress, it would be shameful to have a Speaker who leans to the left, not supporting the conservative principles to which most Texans adhere. Ken Paxton will be that Speaker who will work to keep Texas conservative. As we have all learned, once liberals get their foot in the door, things get out of hand very quickly.
He's my rep and I trust him to do an outstanding job.

I've known Ken for over 10 years. He's a principled person and a good legislator. Also, very conservative.
by Don Pate  2010-11-11 23:15:40
Ken is our State Rep, and he is the perfect choice for the job. He's a true conservative, a Christian, a thoroughly honest man who will not cave in to pressure from either the liberal Democrats or the RINOs. Yet, he will not be a vindictive, spiteful leader, as Joe Strauss appears to be. He has our full and complete support.
by Gwen Andrews  2010-11-11 23:38:12
Doesn't surprise me that Michael Quinn Sullivan endorsed him. Straus won't kiss his butt, so he'll endorse anyone who isn't Straus.

Seriously, y'all have to know that Ken's not up to this. Straus is the only Speaker since WWII to cut general revenue spending.

If you're a true fiscal conservative, you want Straus. Trust me, anything else will be a disaster.
by Don Akers  2010-11-12 00:30:18
ARE THERE ANY REAL PATRIOTS AROUND?

Did not anyone else take time to read Rep. Paxton's announcement letter? It started with, ""Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the service of those who have given so much to our state and nation, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice. It seems appropriate that we focus on how we can best protect our hard-won freedoms which are increasingly under attack."

NO NO NO! Enough is enough. We cannot allow our republican representatives to politicize Veterans Day.

I became a member of the Tea Party because I believe we need a conservative agenda. But my son died serving in Iraq. Today is his day. Veterans Day.

If y'all can't see through the politics then I can no longer support the Tea Party movement.

Ken should be ashamed of himself.
by Mary and James Strouthers  2010-11-12 00:37:11
Don, we are sorry for your loss. My husband and I agree in this case you are right. We're also losing faith in the Tea Party movement in Texas. Warren Chisum is a former Democrat and you're right, it does seem that today Ken Paxton did politicize Veterans Day. May the Lord have mercy on those who do not see the light and take advantage of others.
by Larry Stewart  2010-11-12 00:41:20
Don are you right. Thank you for your service and we are also sorry for the loss of your son. You are a true patriot.
by Harley  2010-11-12 02:07:22
Go for it Ken! Strauss was a disaster looking for a place to happen and it did last session. Let us not make the same mistake again.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with Ken's announcement on Veteran's Day. So if y'all want an excuse to denounce the Tea Party, I suppose any will do. As for me and mine, we're not so thin skinned and will forge ahead with without you. A 'Real Patriot" keeps their eye on the ball!
by Matt Hilton  2010-11-12 10:25:32
Great news! As my State Rep, Ken has proven himself as a true conservative and advocate for small government and less taxation. Let me know how I may help!
by RBB  2010-11-12 10:36:05
It will be wonderful to have a Conservative Republican Speaker instead of the current RINO who needs to be retired. Go Ken!
by Natalie  2010-11-13 23:42:23
To the few people in support of Straus...doesn't it mean anything to you that the Democrats all want Straus?

They want him because he let the Dems have their way in the house and appointed them to important committee chair positions that should have gone to Republicans. In addition, he worked to stifle conservative legislation.

Don't you consider it "power hungry" that Straus had a secret meeting with 11 Republicans and got them to join the Democrats in electing him? That is dirty politics.

A vote for Straus is a vote to throw away all we have worked for. It will be a sad day for Texas if Straus becomes speaker once again.
by Charles  2010-11-14 14:22:59
Yes!!!
by margaret williams  2010-11-15 07:41:01
Paxton would be so good for Texas.
