In the November 2 election, the people of Texas elected 99 Republicans to the 150-member Texas State House of Representatives.  Texans who voted for a Republican candidate for State Representative may be surprised to learn that control of the Texas State House may nonetheless remain in the hands of a leadership team elected by the House Democrats in the prior legislative session.

As things currently stand, incumbent Speaker Joe Straus is on track to be reelected.  Across the State of Texas, grassroots activists are working to organize opposition to Straus' reelection.  Here is a rundown of the relevant background:

The Republicans must fight Straus and his Lieutenants.
I will contact the State Republican Executive Committee and voice my support a Republican Speaker of the Speaker of the House.

My vote is for Leo Berman or Brandon Creighton

We have to oppose straus. A RINO in a statehouse is still a RINO.

The SREC resolution is the way to go!
by Richard Hayes  2010-11-04 15:28:16
The SREC Resolution has it right. Let the Republicans caucus and select a candidate to go before the full House. Don't engage the Democrats.
by Don Naeve  2010-11-04 15:40:27
It seems to me that the Republicans should elect one of their own for Speaker which is a key position and should be held by a Republican. In Strauss statement he stated that 79 out of 99 Republican House members have pledged to support him in January, while 50 Democrats support him. I don't understand what is stopping the Republicans and why there are 79 in favor of Strauss ...???
by  CitizenJane  2010-11-05 11:29:06
Answer: Straus has bought the votes. Joe Driver received over $167K from Straus for his campaign...
by Richard Davey  2010-11-04 16:24:22
we need to stop straus.
by Dave  2010-11-04 17:27:18
We may have one this battle but the war is long from over. Perhaps the main problem will be keeping RINOs from the Republican leadership.
by Rick  2010-11-04 18:38:23
We in Texas had our primary so early in the year that the Tea Party wasn't up to speed enough to be as effective as I believe they are. Perry walks a thin line for me. I guess I'm saying did we get enough conservatives in place this time around?

See this list of the Republicans who%u2019ve pledged support for current Speaker Strauss: http://texaslegislativeupdate.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/claimedspeakersupportlist.pdf

Consider this blog of the Liberty Institute on the matter: http://texaslegislativeupdate.wordpress.com/

The same type of battle is ongoing for GOP leadership positions at the national level as well:

What can we do to make sure that the Speaker of the House is a member of the majority? We do not need this on the State level.

WHOM do we call?
by Jim Husack  2010-11-04 23:02:55
With the new influx of conservatives, leadership changes are in order. Having to lean on democratic support to gain an office only means you owe them. I'm curious as to what the costs have been in terms of legislation and legislation not pursued? What conservative ideals have been sacrificed? Can anyone tell me?
by Chris and Kathy Rhodes  2010-11-04 23:56:37
We're not that famliar with Mr. Straus, but if he's a RINO, he needs to go. These people really do deserve to be at "the back of the bus", not leading the party. Speaking of which, I hope the TEA party will find someone to primary against John Cornyn-I can't wait to get rid of this snake. I hope he's up in 2 yrs. but am afraid it might be 4. That's ok-we have long memories, don't we?
by Victor  2010-11-05 09:05:39
How and where do we focus some pressure to remove Straus as speaker? I would think that if the Republican state reps get a flood of calls, he might easily be dismissed? But it seems that it needs to be coordinated, so people know the issue and know what steps to make, who to call, etc.
by Harley  2010-11-05 09:46:33
I can still feel the anger over Straus quashing key legislation last term. ANY Republican who supports him will be a 'marked man' in my opinion. We didn't come this far to hand it over to a bunch of commies! We're watching!
by Chris  2010-11-05 10:43:25
Straus is a Republican but was elected by the Dems plus 11 RINOS. Check out Jason Moore's www.unifiedrepublicans.com and read the SREC resolution that simply says our next Speaker should be elected by Republicans and beholden to Republicans. Whomever it is should appoint strong conservatives to committee chairmanships.

It is time for the party leaders to chase Strauss out of town. They asked for our votes and we voted for conservative values. There should be no discussion, he needs to step aside.
by Frances Davis  2010-11-06 18:35:46
I called Rep. Tan Parker asking for his support ofs omeone other than Straus for Speaker. What we need is an organized movement with the phone numbers of all the Repts that are supporting Straus and call them. We still need to organize better.

HOW NDO WE GET THAT DOG OUT OF THERE....HELP
by Dan Brady  2010-11-07 02:44:18
This is unbelievable. These are the same people who helped us lose conservatives in the last three elections. Straus ain't a RINO... he's a true fiscal Conservative unlike these clowns. Sullivan is a bedroom conservative (little c) who wants government to control peoples lives. Just like a democrap.

I met Straus years ago at an event in San Antonio. He's as fine a Conservative as I've ever met and unlike these people, he actually spent real money electing fiscal conservatives this year.

I was re-energized this year to stop out of control spending and Straus did that in the last session. This session, he's got much more to work with than he did in 2009.

Y'all don't be fooled by these people. Straus is one of us.

We cannot allow Joe Straus to be Speaker of the Texas House. We must stop him.

by kenlowder  2010-11-08 17:27:45
Time for a tea party at the statehouse again. This time we need to target Texas republicans direct. A party where they live and work.
by Peaches  2010-11-11 13:46:34
Straus and his lieutenants must go. They also need to know that true conservatives are watching and are as determined to see him go as he is to stay on in the position as Speaker.
